Level Ground
Unless you enjoy sleeping on an incline, try to select a spot where at least the sleeping areas are reasonably level. If you can't tell by looking, lie down on the ground. Your inner spirit level should tell you. If you still can't tell, it doesn't matter.

If the ground is level, the tipi can be put up in the normal way. However, if one part of the site is significantly higher or lower than another part, it is necessary to adjust the tripod pole in that sector to compensate. If the sector is low, the pole must be longer to the tie point. If the sector is high, the pole must be shorter to the tie point. If adjustments are not made, your tipi will lean to the low side.

If you cannot find a perfectly flat area for your tipi, see our page on adjusting for slope for more details.
